Cowbridge Old Hall

As part of our continued commitment to preserving historic architecture, this project encompassed a range of carefully executed heritage conservation tasks, aimed at restoring the building’s original character while ensuring its longevity for future generations.

One of the primary focuses of this project was the restoration of cast iron rainwater goods. These elements, integral to the building’s drainage system, were meticulously removed, cleaned, and repaired where necessary. In keeping with conservation best practices, damaged sections were replaced with like-for-like materials, maintaining the historic integrity and visual continuity of the original design.

The timber window conservation involved a thorough assessment of all existing windows, identifying areas of decay and weathering. Skilled craftsmen then carried out sensitive repairs, including splicing in new timber where needed, resin repairs, and the careful refurbishment of original glazing and ironmongery. All works were completed using traditional methods and breathable paints appropriate for heritage structures.

Stone cleaning and repairs were also undertaken, addressing decades of environmental build-up and previous unsympathetic interventions. The stone façade was gently cleaned using non-abrasive, conservation-approved methods to reveal the original material beneath. Where damage was identified, expert masonry repairs were carried out using matching stone and lime-based mortars, ensuring compatibility and visual harmony with the existing structure.

Finally, the project included the restoration of original oak doors, which had suffered from both weather exposure and general wear over time. These doors were carefully stripped, treated for woodworm and rot where necessary, and restored using traditional joinery techniques. The finish was achieved using high-quality, breathable wood treatments that enhance the grain while protecting the timber for years to come.

These works reflect AGA Heritage Conservation’s dedication to excellence in the care and restoration of historically significant buildings, blending craftsmanship with a deep respect for architectural heritage.
